Read MoreGarmin GPS costs in 2026 depend on the device type. A marine chartplotter may cost many times more than a car navigator. Garmin’s road navigators include free map updates, but marine charts and aviation databases require a yearly subscription. Fleet owners will also have to budget for tracking fees and loan interest.
Within each category, Garmin GPS costs rise with screen size and built-in features.

| RV navigators | RV 795 to RV 1095 | ~$449.99 - $899.99 |
| Truck navigators | dēzl OTR620 to OTR1020 | ~$349.99 - $899.99 |
| Handhelds | eTrex SE to GPSMAP H1i Plus | ~$149.99 - $999.99 |
| Marine chartplotters | ECHOMAP UHD2 to GPSMAP 9027 | ~$449.99 - $17,099.99 |
| Aviation portables | aera 660, aera 760 | ~$949 - $1,725 |
Garmin no longer makes the Nuvi. The company’s entry-level model is now the 5-inch Drive 53. Any Garmin Nuvi price you see online comes from resellers of used units. Before you buy one, you’ll need to confirm which map version it holds.
A seller can connect the unit to Garmin Express and see whether a map update is available. We advise you to ask for a screenshot of the result before you pay. The same steps for a unit you already own are in our Nuvi update guide.
Road Navigator owners install their updates with Garmin Express, a free program for Windows and Mac. Map data for other devices is sold once or by subscription.
| Pricing model | What you get | Price |
|---|---|---|
| One-time purchase | City Navigator North America, street maps for compatible devices, as a download | $99.99 |
| Monthly or yearly subscription | Outdoor Maps+ satellite imagery and premium topo layers for handhelds | $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year |
| Yearly subscription | Chart updates for U.S. and coastal Canadian waters, free for the first year on chartplotters sold with built-in charts | $199.99 |
| Yearly subscription | aera 660 U.S. database bundle with navigation data and charts | $149.95 |
Older Nuvi and Drive models sold with lifetime maps carry LM or LMT in the model name. Their owners don’t pay a Garmin map update price either, as long as Garmin’s lifetime map terms apply. Under those terms, updates continue for the useful life of the device. They end earlier if Garmin stops receiving map data from its supplier.
Useful life lasts while the device has the memory for current maps and operates without major repairs. It ends after 24 months without a downloaded update, too. An update in Garmin Express at least once every two years avoids that cutoff.
A map too large for the device’s memory doesn’t end the updates at once. Under the terms, you can install a smaller coverage area or load the map onto a microSD card, if there’s a card slot. A 16 GB microSD card from Garmin costs $29.99. Our map update guide explains each installation step.
Garmin’s car and truck navigators ship with a suction cup mount and a vehicle power cable. Extra spending begins with a second vehicle or with add-ons.
| Item | garmin.com price | When you’ll need it |
|---|---|---|
| Suction cup mount | ~$19.99 | A second vehicle you drive regularly |
| Vehicle power cable | ~$24.99 | The second vehicle, to leave a cable in each one |
| BC 50 backup camera | ~$199.99 | A rear view on a compatible navigator’s screen |
| inReach plan | ~$7.99 - $49.99 a month and a $39.99 activation fee | SOS and satellite messaging on handhelds with inReach |
Fleet tracking adds a monthly service fee for every vehicle. In June 2025, Riverside County, California, approved an amended vehicle tracking (telematics) agreement at $13 per device a month through June 2029. The provider supplies the hardware at no extra cost. County staff install the units themselves. Under its previous contract, the county paid twice as much per device.
A small fleet will receive its own offer. You should ask whether the hardware comes free, as in the county’s contract. A written quote should also state the installation fee and the early termination charge.
A tracker can lose service when its carrier shuts down an older network. The FCC warned in 2022 that the 3G shutdowns could affect vehicle SOS services and other connected devices. If a tracker depends on one carrier’s network, the contract should say who pays to replace it after a shutdown.
The right GPS equipment financing depends on the amount. One truck with a 7-inch dēzl and a Garmin eLog for hours-of-service records needs this hardware.
| Fleet GPS cost at garmin.com prices | 1 truck | 5 trucks |
|---|---|---|
| dēzl OTR720 truck navigator | $449.99 | ~$2,250 |
| Garmin eLog electronic logging device (ELD) for the federal ELD rule, one-time purchase | $249.99 | ~$1,250 |
| Hardware total | ~$700 | ~$3,500 |
Banks, equipment lenders, Garmin’s checkout partner, and the Small Business Administration (SBA) offer technology financing for small business purchases of this size.
| Option | How you repay | Choose it if |
|---|---|---|
| Pay over time at checkout | Four interest-free payments or monthly installments on garmin.com, through its lending partner and subject to approval | You’re an owner-operator replacing one navigator |
| Equipment loan | Fixed monthly installments, secured by the hardware itself | You’d rather own the devices and keep cash free for fuel and payroll |
| Fair market value lease | Lower payments. At lease end, you return the units or buy them at their market value | Your fleet replaces its electronics every few years |
| $1 buyout lease | Higher payments, after which ownership passes to you for $1 | You’ll use the devices until they wear out |
| SBA microloan | Up to $50,000 from a community nonprofit lender, generally at 8%-13% over a term of seven years or less | GPS hardware is one line in a larger startup budget |
| SBA 7(a) Small loan | A bank loan of up to $350,000 that SBA partly guarantees | You’re financing trucks and their electronics in one loan |
The form of GPS equipment financing also affects your tax deduction. If your business owns the navigators, the IRS de minimis safe harbor lets it deduct each one in the year of purchase. The election is made every year. It applies to items up to $2,500 apiece for businesses without an applicable financial statement (an audited one, for example). Each dēzl and eLog is well under that limit.
Lease payments follow the rules for rent. The IRS allows a business to deduct rent on property it uses but doesn’t own. Payments on a fair market value lease meet that test, though the business can’t depreciate units it doesn’t own. A buyout lease is different, because the business will receive title at the end. Its payments can’t be deducted as rent.
No, Garmin doesn’t allow a lifetime map subscription to move to another person or to another Garmin product. A final update before the sale leaves the buyer with the newest map the device can hold.
Not on the Garmin Drive 7.1-inch and 8.8-inch models. Owners of these models can add City Navigator maps for other regions at no additional cost. The Drive 53 and older navigators need a purchased map for each region, provided the model is compatible.
Yes, you can suspend Garmin’s inReach plans, the GPS subscription plans for satellite messaging, for up to 12 consecutive months at no charge. On select devices, emergency SOS remains available during the pause. After 12 months, those devices move to the Enabled plan. On other devices, the plan is canceled at that point. A new activation fee applies if you restart it.
